• Beschreibung: Midazolam is a short-acting benzodiazepine with hypnotic and sedative properties. It is used for the treatment of status epilepticus, for premedication before surgery, or for the short-term treatment of insomnia. Midazolam also has an anti-convulsant effect and can be used to inhibit the spread of local anaesthetic agents in regional nerve blocks. As an intravenous drug, it is typically administered at a dose between 0.1 mg and 1 mg per kilogram of body weight, although higher doses may be given by continuous infusion over several hours. The drug binds to GABA A receptors in the brain, which increases the frequency of chloride ion channel opening resulting in increased inhibition of neurotransmission between neurons. Midazolam has been shown to produce statistically significant decreases in electroencephalographic (EEG) power density in healthy volunteers as well as a number of clinical studies involving intubation procedures.
