2-(Methylthio)benzoic acid (MTBA) is a chemical compound that is used as a catalyst in organic synthesis. It reacts with chloride ions to form an organometallic complex, which can be used to catalyze the demethylation of aromatic compounds. This reaction is carried out in trifluoroacetic acid (TFA), which provides the necessary acidity to activate the methylene group. MTBA forms stable complexes with methanol and has been shown to be effective in reactions involving benzene and other aromatic molecules. MTBA has also been shown to have reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography properties, which make it useful for purification of benzoate derivatives.
