Methyl 7-methoxy-1-benzofuran-2-carboxylate (MBC) is a cytotoxic compound that is used in the treatment of cancer. MBC has been shown to inhibit the growth of human cancer cell lines and induce apoptosis in these cells. The cytotoxicity of MBC was found to be related to its ability to inhibit protein synthesis, leading to cell death. MBC forms an ester with the carboxylic acid group on the cancer cell surface, which may lead to its accumulation within the cell and inhibition of protein synthesis.
