2-(2-Methoxyphenyl)propanoic acid is a white crystalline solid that is soluble in organic solvents. It can be prepared by the Wittig reaction of 2-bromo-1-(2-methoxyphenyl)ethanol with phenylmagnesium bromide. This compound is used to synthesize cinchonidine and demethylated analogues, which have been shown to possess antihypertensive properties. 2-(2-Methoxyphenyl)propanoic acid also catalyzes the hydrogenation of chlorides to alcohols and cyclization of dimethoxy compounds to produce intramolecular cyclized products.
