N-Methyl-4-nitrobenzenemethanesulfonamide is a chemical compound that is used as a catalyst in the production of nitrobenzene. It is soluble in organic solvents and has been shown to be selective for nitrobenzene when used as a model substrate. N-Methyl-4-nitrobenzenemethanesulfonamide deactivates by reacting with hydrogen sulfide, which reduces the reactivity of the catalyst. The reaction mechanism may involve an initial attack of sulfur on the methyl group of 4-nitrobenzenemethanesulfonamide, followed by an addition to the nitro group of 4-nitrobenzenemethanesulfonamide. This reaction is slow under normal conditions, but becomes more rapid when heated or in the presence of catalysts such as metal oxides.
