Beschreibung

Methoxyfenozide is an insecticide that belongs to the group of thionyl compounds. It is used as a pesticide in agriculture, forestry, and horticulture. Methoxyfenozide has been shown to be virulent against the larvae of mosquitoes, blackflies, and other insects. This compound inhibits the growth of various types of bacteria by causing a disruption in the synthesis of proteins. Methoxyfenozide is synthesized from 2-methyl-3-methoxybenzoylchloride by treatment with magnesium chloride in hydrochloric acid at elevated temperature. The product obtained is then treated with methanol to produce methyl ester and methoxyfenozide.
2-Methyl-3-methoxybenzoylchloride can be prepared by chlorinating 2-methylbenzoic acid in the presence of an acidic catalyst such as hydrochloric acid at elevated temperature:
