4-[(Methylamino)methyl]benzonitrile is a compound that is used as a precursor in the synthesis of active pharmaceutical ingredients. It reacts with chlorides to form amines and has been shown to react with zinc methacrylate to form a product with a shift. 4-[(Methylamino)methyl]benzonitrile can also be used to introduce benzonitrile into an aluminum oxide matrix, which has been shown to improve the performance of solar cells. This compound has been found to have viscosity-increasing properties, which may be due to its ability to form hydrogen bonds or ionic bonds with water molecules. 4-[(Methylamino)methyl]benzonitrile undergoes conformational changes when irradiated with UV light, which may lead it to become more reactive.
