The reactivity of 5-[2-(Methylthio)ethyl]hydantoin with water is negligible, making it an excellent choice for use in wastewater treatment plants. It has been shown to be effective at removing l-amino acid from reaction solutions when introduced as a carbon source. This compound also has been shown to be an effective agent for the introduction of small molecules into bacteria without disrupting metabolic pathways. The bulk density of 5-[2-(Methylthio)ethyl]hydantoin can be increased by up to 10% by introducing dodecyl groups on the molecule. It has been used as a cloning agent and racemase inhibitor.
