This compound is a mesomorph and can be used in photophysical studies. Methyl 6-hydoxy-2-naphthoate can react with acid conjugates or lectins when it is in the neutral form, but does not react with either when it is in the form of a salt. X-ray diffraction data from this compound shows that it has a molecular shape that resembles that of a square pyramid.
