Mineral oil is a synthetic liquid that is used as a lubricant, in paints and varnishes, and as an ingredient in other products. It does not cause allergic reactions because it is not an organic substance. Mineral oil is made from petroleum by distillation and purification. The process of heating the oil causes it to decompose into various hydrocarbons and polymers that are cationic surfactants. This product has been shown to have carcinogenic potential, which may be due to its ability to bind with DNA and form adducts that can initiate mutations. Mineral oil has low expression levels in fetal bovine tissue (less than 1% of total fatty acids). It also inhibits polymerase chain reaction (PCR) activity in vitro, which may be due to its ability to inhibit the synthesis of DNA. Mineral oil is usually stored at room temperature and reacts with ethylene diamine, causing cross-linking reactions that create polymeric matrices with a low bioavailability
