Methanesulfonic acid is a strong oxidizing agent that has been used for the treatment of infectious diseases and to induce remission in inflammatory bowel disease. Methanesulfonic acid is used as an analytical reagent in biochemistry, organic chemistry, and analytical chemistry. It has been used to measure cortisol concentration in blood samples. Methanesulfonic acid has been shown to increase the transcriptional activity of NF-κB by inducing the phosphorylation of IκBα. This leads to increased transcription of genes encoding cytokines that are involved in inflammation, leading to physiological effects such as increased heart rate and blood pressure, which can be measured using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy.
