Dibutyl itaconate is a sodium salt of dibutyl itaconate, which is a polyvinyl cross-linking agent. It is used as a cross-linking agent in the production of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and other plastics. Dibutyl itaconate reacts with hydroxyl groups to form an ether linkage. It also has been used as a solid catalyst for the polymerization of methyl ethyl ketone (MEK). Dibutyl itaconate has an activation energy of about 84 kcal/mol at 20 °C. The particle size can be controlled by adding magnetic particles to the solution or by using a flow system that provides good mixing, such as a high shear mixer.
