Mixed Tocopherols (MT) are a group of natural compounds that occur in food and maintain the antioxidant balance in living cells. MT have been shown to reduce PGE2 levels, which are associated with cancer. They also have antioxidative properties, which may help protect against the development of cancer. Studies have found that alpha-tocopherol, one type of MT, can inhibit tumor growth by inducing cell death and inhibiting tumor angiogenesis. Alpha-tocopherol has been shown to be toxic to some carcinoma cell lines but not others. The toxicity varies depending on the type of carcinoma cells and their sensitivity to alpha-tocopherol. Alpha-tocopherol has been shown to be active in HIV patients who are receiving antiretroviral therapy, but not in those not on anti-retroviral therapy. MT appear to be safe for use during pregnancy as they did not affect maternal blood levels or fetal development in vivo human studies.
