The drug blocks the formation of autophagosomes by inhibiting key proteins involved in autophagy, preventing the degradation of cellular components and thus killing the parasite. MRT 68921 dihydrochloride binds to a conserved region in the cysteine protease domain of the protein Atg4B, thereby inhibiting its activity. This inhibition prevents the degradation of cellular components and leads to cell death.
