N-Methyl-3,3-diphenylpropylamine is a hydrophobic and lipophilic drug that is metabolized in the liver by demethylation, alkylation, and thionyl chloride hydrolysis. The metabolites are then excreted in the urine. This drug has been used as a pharmacological agent to simplify the elucidation of reaction mechanisms, but it has also been used as an environmental pollutant. N-Methyl-3,3-diphenylpropylamine is not active against bacteria or fungi. It can cause capillary constriction by blocking the activity of phenylethylamine norepinephrine transporter on vascular smooth muscle cells. The ammonium salt form of this compound has also been shown to exhibit antihypertensive effects when administered intravenously in rats.
