4-Methoxybenzyl isothiocyanate (4MBITC) is a volatile oil that can be obtained from the seeds of the plant Brassica juncea. It has been shown to have potent antibacterial activity, which is due to its ability to inhibit bacterial growth by inhibiting protein synthesis. 4MBITC has been shown to be effective against a wide range of bacteria, including staphylococci, streptococci, enterobacteria and pseudomonads. 4MBITC also has antiviral properties and can inhibit HIV infection in vitro. The mechanism of this inhibition is not understood but may involve inhibition of viral reverse transcriptase and DNA polymerase.
