Produktinformation
- (2R)-2-Hydroxy-3-(phenylmethoxy)-propanoic acid methyl ester
Methyl 3-O-benzyl-D-glycerate is a glyceric acid ester that is insoluble in water but soluble in ethanol and ether. It is produced by oxidation of carbohydrates and has the chemical formula CH3OCH2CH(OH)CO2H. The compound crystallizes from alcohols and ethers, with a melting point of about 100°C. In the presence of ammonium nitrate, it forms methyl 3-O-benzyl-D-glycerate nitrate (CH3OCH2CH(ONO2)CO2H). When heated with dilute acids, it gives carboxylic acids, alcohols, oxides of nitrogen, and carbon monoxide. Methyl 3-O-benzyl-D-glycerate has been used as an intermediate for the synthesis of other glycerates.
