1-Methylxanthine is a methylxanthine that is found in coffee and tea. It is an alkaloid with a chemical structure similar to theophylline. 1-Methylxanthine has shown efficacy in the treatment of bowel disease and has been used as a drug to treat acute toxicities. It also possesses antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties. 1-Methylxanthine induces various enzyme activities, such as phosphodiesterase, which are important for signal pathways involved in metabolic disorders and energy metabolism. It also enhances locomotor activity in mice by blocking adenosine receptors. 1-Methylxanthine activates the ryanodine receptor, which then leads to an increase in intracellular calcium concentration.
