(S)-5-Methylhydantoin is an amino acid that is found in the cells of Pisum sativum and Arachis hypogaea. It is a stereospecific compound, which means that it has only one enantiomer. The (S) form of 5-methylhydantoin is more active than the (R) form, but both forms are insoluble. This compound was first used as a fingerprinting agent for plants, but it also has been used as a probe to detect DNA hybridization. The (S)-enantiomer can be used to reveal differences in cyclic structures by forming covalent bonds with the hydroxyl group on the sugar ring. It can also be used to detect phaseolus and hydantoin strains of bacteria. The activity of this compound depends on its substrate specificity and whether it is in its free form or bound to DNA or RNA.
