Metoprolol acid is a trifluoroacetic acid derivative of the beta-adrenergic blocker, metoprolol. It is used for the treatment of hypertension and angina pectoris. Metoprolol succinate is activated in vivo to form metoprolol acid by hydrolysis with esterases, which are found in various tissues including liver and blood plasma. The biological activity of metoprolol succinate has been shown to be dose-dependent, with increased biological activity at higher concentrations. This drug has been shown to inhibit caffeine's ability to stimulate cyclic AMP production in fat cells. Metoprolol succinate also inhibits the growth of Salvia miltiorrhizae, an herbal remedy that has been used as a treatment for high blood pressure and other cardiovascular diseases.
