• Beschreibung: Mevastatin is a drug that inhibits the synthesis of cholesterol and has been used to treat hypercholesterolemia. It binds to the hydroxyl group at position 3 on the mevalonate molecule, which prevents the formation of 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A (HMG CoA) and consequently reduces the production of cholesterol. Mevastatin has been shown to inhibit mitochondrial functions in wild-type strain yeast cells and myeloma cell lines, which may be due to receptor activity. In addition, it has been shown to induce neuronal death in a polymerase chain reaction assay by inhibiting DNA synthesis.
