Miltirone is a pro-apoptotic protein that has been shown to be effective in the treatment of bowel disease. Miltirone exhibits significant cytotoxicity and has been shown to have antibacterial efficacy, as well as inhibiting P-glycoprotein (P-gp) substrate activity. Miltirone binds to mitochondria and induces mitochondrial membrane potential changes, which may contribute to its pro-apoptotic properties. In a model system, it was found that miltiorrhizae extract from Salvia miltiorrhizae inhibits the growth of bacteria. Molecular docking analysis revealed that miltiorrhizae extract interacts with the P-gp substrate binding site on the bacterial surface and blocks the binding of P-gp substrates, thereby preventing drug efflux.
