This compound is extracted from plant tissues using solid phase microextraction (SPME) and analyzed by NMR spectroscopy. The chemical structure of 4-methoxy-2,5-dimethyl-3(2H)-furanone has been determined by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). 4-Methoxy-2,5-dimethyl-3(2H)-furanone has also been shown to inhibit the growth of some cancer cells in tissue culture models. In addition, it can be used as a model protein for methyl anthranilate, which is an intermediate in the reaction pathway that produces this compound.
