2-Methyl-3-propylpyrazine is a flavorant that has a high specificity for tobacco. It is used as an additive in cigarettes, cigars, and other tobacco products. 2-Methyl-3-propylpyrazine has been shown to be a possible marker for the identification of tobacco smoking. This compound can be detected by gas chromatography with flame ionization detection (GC/FID) and gas chromatography with mass spectrometry (GC/MS) methods. 2-Methyl-3-propylpyrazine is also one of the compounds that are responsible for the distinctive aroma of roasted coffee. It can be found in many types of coffee beans, including Colombian and Brazilian varieties. It is also found in cocoa and cocoa products such as chocolate, cocoa powder, and chocolate syrup.
