It has been shown to be effective against resistant strains of Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Mycobacterium avium complex. 4-(Morpholin-4-yl)benzonitrile binds to the mycobacterial 16S ribosomal RNA and inhibits protein synthesis, leading to cell death by inhibiting the production of proteins vital for cell division. 4-(Morpholin-4-yl)benzonitrile has also been shown to have antimycobacterial activity and can inhibit bacterial growth by interfering with DNA replication. The physicochemical properties of this drug are not yet known.
