2-Methyl-1,3-dithiane is a synthetic chemical that acts as a thiamine pyrophosphate (TPP) additive. TPP is an enzyme cofactor that is essential in the metabolism of carbohydrates and amino acids. It catalyzes the decarboxylation of amino acids and the oxidative deamination of keto acids. 2-Methyl-1,3-dithiane is used to increase the shelf life of products such as calcium stearate, diallyl trisulfide, zirconium oxide, and other additives. This chemical has been shown to be bifunctional in its reactions with electrophiles and sulfoxides. 2-Methyl-1,3-dithiane also has chromatographic properties when ionized by mass spectroscopy or after gas chromatography. The dehydration process can be used to remove unwanted side products from this chemical's synthesis.
