It is an experimental model for studying the reactions of sulfoxides and their derivatives, including the transfer reactions of sulfoxides. MPTS has been shown to inhibit transcription-polymerase chain reaction and protein synthesis in bacteria by reacting with dinucleotide phosphate. This chemical has also been used as a wastewater treatment agent in some cases.
