The reaction mechanism of 2-methylnaphthalene is not completely understood but it is thought that the carbonyl group on the benzene ring may be involved. 2-Methylnaphthalene can react with piperonyl butoxide, which is an organic compound, and naphthalene to form 1-methylnaphthalene.
