The compound reacts with a hydroxyl group to form 2,2-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)propane through the addition of hydrogen bonds. It is also used for wastewater treatment and in radiation-induced polymerization reactions. 2-Methoxyhydroquinone can react with alcohol residues on proteins to form p-hydroxybenzoic acid esters. In addition, this compound has been shown to be an excellent enzyme substrate, which may result from its ability to undergo hydrogen bonding interactions with the enzyme active site.
