Methyl 3-mercaptopropionate is a reactive compound that contains a thiol group. It is used as an antimicrobial agent and is classified as a quaternary ammonium salt. Methyl 3-mercaptopropionate reacts with sodium salts to form water-soluble sodium methyl mercaptoacetates, which can be used in the treatment of urinary tract infections. It has been shown to have hemolytic activity in human serum, which may lead to an increase in the level of bilirubin and indirect hyperbilirubinemia. Methyl 3-mercaptopropionate is also known to react with ethylene diamine, forming ethylthioethanolamine, which has been shown to inhibit the actions of aminoglycoside antibiotics such as gentamicin.
