L-Methionine sulfone is an enzyme substrate that is a potent antagonist of glutamate, the α subunit of aspartate aminotransferase, and proteolytic enzymes. L-Methionine sulfone inhibits protein synthesis by competitively inhibiting uptake of methionine into the cell. This compound has been shown to have inhibitory properties in tissue culture assays and also has potent antagonistic effects on glutamate, the α subunit of aspartate aminotransferase, and proteolytic enzymes.
