1-Methyltryptamine is a psychoactive drug that has been used to study the mechanisms of psychosis. It can be synthesized in the laboratory and is structurally similar to serotonin, but its effects are more potent than those of serotonin. 1-Methyltryptamine can cause a pressor response and phytoalexin production in plants. It also acts as a cerebral stimulant, causing hallucinations and delusions. It inhibits histone methylation at lysine 9 and 18, which may contribute to the development of schizophrenia. The binding affinity for 1-Methyltryptamine at the N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) is higher than that of other hallucinogens such as LSD or psilocybin, so it may have potential as an antidepressant or antipsychotic drug.
