1-Methylpiperidine-4-carboxylic acid is a potent inhibitor of acetylcholinesterase and butyrylcholinesterase, which are enzymes that break down the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. It is used to treat myasthenia gravis, a condition in which the body's immune system attacks the neuromuscular junction, causing muscle weakness. 1-Methylpiperidine-4-carboxylic acid was shown to be selective for nicotinic receptors, with no effect on muscarinic receptors. This is believed to be due to steric interactions between the two molecules. 1-Methylpiperidine-4-carboxylic acid is an acidic compound that undergoes hydrolysis under basic conditions. It can react with amines to form imine derivatives that are also acidic compounds.
