mPEG12-OH is a synthetic polymer that has an average molecular weight of 12,000 daltons. It has good surface properties and can be used as a coating material to modify the morphology of a surface. mPEG12-OH can also be conjugated with different molecules to create new materials. For example, it can be conjugated with proteins or drugs to form a biodegradable matrix for cell culture applications. This polymer is also used in sample preparation for electron microscopy and in polymeric matrices for drug delivery studies. mPEG12-OH is synthesized from ethylene glycol, methoxyethanol, and acetic acid using photoelectron irradiation (PEI) in a vacuum chamber at high temperatures. The nitrogen atoms are then added by chemical oxidation. These polymers are typically prepared in the form of thin films that can be used as membranes or coatings on surfaces.
