It is used to diagnose cells with resistance to imatinib and dasatinib, which are drugs used in the treatment of chronic myeloid leukemia. Microcystin-YR also inhibits bcr-abl kinase, an enzyme involved in the production of RNA and DNA in cancer cells. This drug has been shown to cause cell lysis, or the breakdown of cells, and has been found to be effective against liver lesions caused by congestive heart failure and skin cancer. It has also been shown to inhibit cyclic peptide synthesis.
