The magainins are cyclic peptides that form a class of antimicrobial peptides. They act by disrupting the integrity of the cytoplasmic membrane, leading to bacterial cell death. Magainin 2 is a member of this class of peptides and has been shown to have significant cytotoxicity against several types of cancer cells in culture. It also has an acidic pH, which may allow it to cross through the lipid bilayer of membranes and disrupt their integrity.
