Motilin is a peptide hormone that regulates the motility of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. It is released from the ileum and duodenum in response to food in the stomach or small intestine. Motilin stimulates contractions of both the stomach and intestine, causing an increase in peristalsis along its entire length. The release of motilin from the ileum and duodenum is stimulated by ghrelin, a peptide hormone produced by cells in the stomach lining. Motilin also stimulates gastric emptying, which may be due to its ability to inhibit gastric acid secretion through inhibition of histamine release.
Motilin has been used as a marker for GI motility disorders such as carcinoid syndrome and congestive heart failure. It has also been used as a tool for studying other diseases such as irritable bowel syndrome and Parkinson's disease, as well as for measuring drug absorption rates.
