Mefenpyr-diethyl is a low-energy compound that is used as an herbicide to control weeds. It has been shown to be effective in wheat and rye, but not in oats. Mefenpyr-diethyl inhibits the transport of phospholipids across the membrane of plants, which inhibits the formation of chlorophyll and other pigments that are necessary for photosynthesis. This compound also prevents the movement of ions and water across the membrane, leading to dehydration and death. Mefenpyr-diethyl binds to fatty acids that are present in plant membranes, preventing them from being released into the cytoplasm and inhibiting lipid synthesis. The gene analysis on fusarium avenaceum showed mutations in genes encoding proteins responsible for transporting phospholipids and fatty acids.
