3-Nitro-4-aminobenzoic acid is a synthetic intermediate that is used in the synthesis of a number of pharmaceuticals, including 3-nitrobenzoyl chloride, which is used as an intermediate in the synthesis of phenazine. The α form can be converted to the β form by heating with chlorine and methyl ester. The β form has been shown to inhibit parasite growth. This product also reacts with sodium hypochlorite to produce the corresponding α-chloro derivative, which is useful for making a number of compounds such as methyl 3-nitrobenzoate and 3-amino-4-(methylthio)benzoic acid. 3N4ABA can be reacted with dimethylaminopyridine to yield the corresponding N-methyl derivative, which can be hydrolyzed to produce methyl piperazinecarboxylate.
