5-Nitro-1H-pyrazole is a pyrazole with reactive nitro groups. It is used in the synthesis of analogs of pyrazoles, which are used as diagnostic agents for urinary infections. 5-Nitro-1H-pyrazole reacts with iodide to form a yellow compound that can be detected by its color. The reaction solution changes from yellow to red when exposed to radiation and can be used as a diagnostic tool. The biological sample should be treated with hydrogen peroxide to reactivate the reactive nitro group before it is added to the reaction solution. The hydroxyl group on 5-nitro-1H-pyrazole has an electron withdrawing effect on the amide bond, resulting in an increased redox potential.
