The analytical reagent has been used for the analysis of impurities in polymers, such as trifluoroacetic acid, and for wastewater treatment. Radiation causes the release of light emission from 1-naphthol-4-sulfonic acid, making it useful for determining the level of nitrite ion in wastewater. This chemical has also been found to react with sulfamate ions to produce structural formula (SO2)2NH3.
