Nerolidol is a polymyxin B derivative that has been shown to have minimal toxicity in experimental models. Nerolidol has been shown to inhibit the production of prostaglandin J2, which is an inflammatory mediator, by inhibiting the activity of cyclooxygenase-1 and cyclooxygenase-2 enzymes. This compound also inhibits the production of cytokines such as TNF-α and IL-6, which are proinflammatory mediators. It does not inhibit other inflammatory mediators such as IL-8 or IL-10. Nerolidol also shows strong antibacterial activity against gram negative bacteria and fungi, but does not show any significant activity against gram positive bacteria.
