6-NitroQuinoxaline is a synthetic antibacterial agent that inhibits bacterial growth by binding to the enzyme DNA gyrase. It is a sublethal agent, which means it does not kill bacteria, but slows their growth. 6-NitroQuinoxaline has been shown to inhibit the production of phosphatase and alkylative compounds in staphylococcus cells, as well as programmed cell death (apoptosis). The fluorescence of 6-NitroQuinoxaline has been used to demonstrate cellular morphology in staphylococcus cells. This compound also catalyzes the reduction of nitric oxide with molecular oxygen, generating active methylene compounds that are thought to be responsible for its antimicrobial activity.
