4-Nitrophenylglyoxal hydrate (4NPG) is a catalyst that can be used in a variety of chemical reactions. It has been shown to be an efficient and recyclable carbonate catalyst for the synthesis of sodium carbonate from sodium bicarbonate and carbon dioxide. 4NPG also catalyzes the condensation reaction between ethylene glycol and nitric acid, which produces acetic acid, nitric oxide, and water. Elemental analyses have shown that 4NPG is an elemental compound with four nitrogen atoms. FTIR spectroscopy has shown peaks at 1716 cm-1, 1428 cm-1, 1203 cm-1, 1064 cm-1, 804 cm-1, 797 cm-1 and 614 cm-1.
