The mechanism of 1,9-nonanedicarboxylic acid (NDA) is not yet fully understood. It reacts with water to produce hydrogen and a hydroxyl group, which may be the key to its resistance. NDA is an inorganic acid that is used as a pharmaceutical preparation for chronic exposure to nitrogen compounds. The metastable form of NDA can be synthesized from ethylene diamine and malonic acid and has reactive properties. This compound has been found in natural compounds and fatty acids.
