Octanohydrazide is a lipase inhibitor that prevents the digestion of dietary fat by inhibiting the production of lipoprotein lipase. The inhibition of lipoprotein lipase leads to decreased levels of triglycerides in the blood and increased levels of high-density lipoproteins (HDL). This drug is used in combination with other drugs for the treatment of high cholesterol and certain types of inflammatory diseases. It has been shown to have no effect on low-density lipoproteins (LDL) or total cholesterol. Octanohydrazide is a thermal labile molecule that can be hydrolyzed under acidic conditions. Usnic acid, an organic compound found in lichens, has been found to increase the stability of octanohydrazide, likely through chelation with metal ions such as iron and copper. Octanohydrazide has also been shown to inhibit enzymatic activity when bound to protein surfaces. This property may be exploited for use in pharmaceutical preparations and
