1-Octacosanol is a natural compound that is found in small amounts in various foods, such as fish and wheat germ. It is also produced by the body as a metabolite of long-chain fatty acids. 1-Octacosanol has been shown to be effective in treating bowel disease by inhibiting the adenosine diphosphate (ADP) induced increase in intestinal contractions. This activity was shown using an in vitro method on guinea pig ileum preparations and octacosanol inhibited the ADP induced rise of cytosolic calcium levels. 1-Octacosanol has also been shown to have hypoglycemic effects, which may be due to its ability to bind to DNA and decrease glucose uptake into cells. This effect was seen when octacosanol was administered orally to rats at high doses (0.5g/kg). This natural compound can also be used for treating metabolic disorders, such as type 2 diabetes mellitus, through its
