2-Octen-4-one is an electrophilic compound that is used in the synthesis of β-unsaturated aldehydes and ketones. The reactivity of 2-octen-4-one can be tuned by changing the substituents on the carbonyl group. In this way, it can be used as a nucleophile and as a protonation agent. 2-Octen-4-one is also able to form amine bonds with other molecules, which makes it an interesting biomolecular probe for studying protein structure and function. It has been shown to have an incremental effect on the rate of reaction between aldehydes and amines, which makes it useful for synthesizing novel molecules.
