N2-Palmitoylguanine (N2-PG) is a synthetic compound with antiviral properties. It is an enantiomer of the natural product guanine and has been shown to have potent antiviral activity in vitro. N2-PG inhibits the synthesis of DNA and RNA, which are essential for viral replication. The chirality of the molecule may be responsible for its antiviral effects, as it is not active against cells that are resistant to other antiviral drugs such as acyclovir or ganciclovir. N2-PG binds to the polymerase enzyme and prevents it from carrying out its function, thereby inhibiting transcription and replication. This drug also has a chemical nature similar to that of a carbohydrate, which may account for its anti-viral properties in vivo.
