- 1-Phenylethanethiol
- (1S)-1-phenylethanethiol
(S)-1-Phenylethanethiol is a naturally occurring molecule that has a chiral center. The enantiomers of this compound are (S)-1-phenylethanethiol and (R)-1-phenylethanethiol. The racemic mixture of these two enantiomers is also known as phenylethyl alcohol. This substance is used for the quantification of 1-phenylethanethiol in plant leaves using isotope dilution. It is also used for the determination of the purity of (S)-1-phenylethanethiol by gas chromatography with electron capture detection, which measures the relative concentrations of each enantiomer in an unknown sample. The use of stable isotopes to quantify this compound is shown by derivation from hexanal, which can be quantified using a headspace assay that employs stable isotope dilution techniques.
